Active Schools consultation: 11th June 2019

What helps young people to be physically active?

The Active Schools Flag (ASF) initiative aims to get young people more active in school and outside school. They wanted to get the views of young people on the things that help them to be physically active and the things that stop them being physically active. The young people’s opinions will inform the development of a survey for students in second-level schools.

The Department of Children and Youth Affairs is working with the ASF team and conducted the consultation with young people from all over the country on 11th June. 32 Comhairle members were in attendance.

On the day young people took part in an Open Space session on two questions:

  • What helps young people to be physically active in school and outside school?
  • What are the barriers to young people being physically active in school and outside school?

They brainstormed their ideas on post-its and came up with a number of overarching themes which were further discussed at a World Café session.

Participants were also asked their opinions on the draft ASF survey for schools and their feedback was submitted to the ASF team at the end of the day. A report of the findings is currently being compiled.
