About us

Current topics

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Comhairle na nÓg are working on two key topics in 2020:

1. No to Peer Pressure
2. Climate Change

Previous topics

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Comhairle na nÓg focused on the issues of Drugs and Alcohol in 2019. They made a poster and video to raise awareness about the peer pressure surrounding drugs and alcohol.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Comhairle na nÓg were working on the primary topic of mental health in 2017-18, focusing primarily on a mental health awareness campaign in schools..As a short-term project we worked on student supports. The group are researching what supports young people would like from their guidance counselors and teachers in school. We will distribute survey shoe-boxes to each of our Comhairle schools initially, and then into every school in the county asking young people a series of questions. We will then collate all the information from the surveys and produce a report on their findings which will be distributed to all schools involved.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Comhairle na nÓg have been working on the topic of mental health for the past number of years. Our definition of mental health is:

“Mental Health is the way in which we deal with positive and negative experiences during different times in our lives.”

What we have done to promote this issue?

  • CORE, a musical festival for young people
  • The Dragon’s Den
  • Happy Cities Video
  • Positive text messages
  • Note-to-self letters

Over the next two years we will also work on the promotion of First-Aid and CPR in the county.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Comhairle na nÓg have also been working on a campaign called “The Lost Years” which aims to reduce the price of bus fares for 16 – 18 year olds on Dublin Bus. Task groups continue to promote the issue of the ‘Lost Years’. Comhairle  members continued to promote and highlight the issue of transport cost for 16- 18 year olds. More letters sent to the Minster of Transport, RPA (LUAS), Dublin Bus and Irish Rail. The availability and promotion of the Student Travelcard was researched and pursued.

Our secondary topic for 2012-13 was Events for Young People. Task groups worked on the promotion of  ‘Events for Young People’. The action  was given a boost when Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council impressed by the involvement of Comhairle na nÓg members in the dlr Fusion Festival in 2012,  offered to financially support an event for young people in 2013. This support encouraged and allowed Comhairle members to create and hold an event called ‘CORE’.

In Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Comhairle na nÓg we raised awareness about the Comhairle to the public, held seminars about ‘Stereotyping and attitudes’, made a DVD and radio show about the effects of under-age drinking and held a youth event called ‘Fusion’ – click on link below for more info.
