Consultations on Teacher Supply in Schools
Department of Education and Skills, 8th and 9th October 2019

The Teaching Council and Department of Education and Skills are carrying out a review in relation to teacher supply in schools. As part of the review process, the Department of Children & Youth Affairs carried out consultations with children and young people on the topic of teacher supply in October 2019 in order to incorporate their views into the final report. Two consultations were held: one with Comhairle members and one with primary school children.

The aim of the consultations is twofold: to identify issues such as how students are affected by teachers being absent and looking at the good things that are happening to mitigate the impact of this. Participants will be invited to come up with school-based solutions to this issue. The results of the consultation process will be used by the Department of Education and Skills and the Teaching Council to help inform future decisions and policy approaches to teacher supply. The report from the day’s discussions is currently being compiled and will be available here upon publication. It will also be disseminated to all participants.
